What it means

The pylorus is the ring of muscle between the stomach and the small intestine. In this condition it grows thick, usually in the first weeks of life, so milk cannot pass out of the stomach easily. It is fixed by a surgery called pyloromyotomy, in which the thick muscle is cut lengthwise to open the channel.

For the nurse

Before surgery, fluid and electrolyte problems from vomiting are corrected with IV fluids, and intake, output and daily weights are watched closely. After surgery, feeding is started in small amounts as ordered.
