QOD

An abbreviation for "every other day" that must not be used; write "every other day" in full.

What it means

From the Latin quaque altera die. Written by hand, QOD has been read as QD (daily) or QID (four times a day), especially if the "o" is poorly formed. The Joint Commission's "Do Not Use" list bans it in all forms (QOD, qod, Q.O.D., q.o.d.), along with QD for daily.

For the nurse

Write "every other day" in full, and clarify any order that uses QOD before giving the drug.
