What it means
A trait, habit or exposure linked to a higher chance of a problem. Modifiable risk factors can be changed, such as smoking, diet, activity and blood pressure. Nonmodifiable ones cannot, such as age, sex, family history and genes. Having a risk factor does not mean the problem will happen.
For the nurse
Teaching and health promotion focus on modifiable risk factors. "Risk for" nursing diagnoses are based on the client's risk factors, such as risk for falls.
