What it means
A very common symptom, medically called pharyngitis when the throat is inflamed. Most sore throats are caused by viruses, as with a cold or flu, and get better on their own in about a week. Some are caused by bacteria, most importantly group A streptococcus (strep throat), which is treated with antibiotics. A sore throat is also common after a breathing tube or a nasogastric tube.
For the nurse
Offer warm salt-water gargles, fluids, lozenges and soft foods. Report trouble breathing or swallowing, drooling, or a muffled voice, which can mean a more serious throat infection.
