Word parts
What it means
A spleen that is bigger than normal. It can come from infections such as mononucleosis, liver disease that raises pressure in the portal vein, blood disorders such as sickle cell disease or leukemia, and other conditions. An enlarged spleen may cause fullness in the upper left abdomen or pain there, and it can trap blood cells, lowering blood counts.
For the nurse
Teach the client to avoid contact sports and heavy lifting until cleared, because an enlarged spleen can rupture. Report sudden pain in the upper left abdomen or left shoulder, dizziness or signs of shock.
