What it means
A normal stage of development that usually begins around 6 to 8 months of age, once the baby can tell familiar faces from new ones. The infant may cry, look frightened, hide or cling to the parent when a stranger comes close. It fades during the second year.
For the nurse
Approach slowly, talk to the parent first, and examine the infant on the parent's lap when you can. Do the least upsetting parts of the exam first. Teach parents that it is a healthy sign of attachment.
