symphysis pubis

The joint at the front of the pelvis where the left and right pubic bones meet.

SIM-fuh-sis PYOO-bis noun

What it means

A firm joint held together by a pad of cartilage, low in the middle of the abdomen above the genitals. It is a common landmark: fundal height in pregnancy is measured from the top of the symphysis pubis to the top of the uterus, and a suprapubic catheter goes in just above it. In pregnancy, hormones loosen the joint, which can cause pain at the front of the pelvis.
