What it means
In pharmacology, TCAs are older antidepressants such as amitriptyline and nortriptyline, also used for nerve pain and to prevent migraines. They cause strong anticholinergic effects (dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention, blurred vision), drowsiness and low blood pressure on standing, and an overdose can cause deadly heart rhythms and seizures. In biology, TCA cycle is another name for the Krebs cycle that cells use to make energy.
For the nurse
Because an overdose is so dangerous, watch clients with depression for suicide risk and give limited supplies as ordered. TCAs are on the Beers list of drugs to avoid in older adults.
