What it means
A drug-free way to relieve pain. A small battery unit sends low-level electric current through pads placed on the skin over or near the painful area. It is thought to block pain signals and help the body release endorphins. It is used for back pain, joint pain and in labor.
For the nurse
Place pads on clean, dry, unbroken skin, never over the front of the neck, the eyes or a pacemaker, and check the skin under them. Do not use it in water.
