What it means
One of the most common reasons adults see a provider. Most cases come from strained muscles or ligaments and get better within weeks. Other causes include disc problems, arthritis and narrowing of the spinal canal. Pain that runs down the leg below the knee suggests a pinched nerve (sciatica).
For the nurse
Ask about the onset, what makes it worse and any numbness or weakness. Report at once new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, leg weakness, fever or a history of cancer. Teach safe lifting and staying active.
