What it means

Most healthy people have no symptoms or a mild flu-like illness. It is dangerous in pregnancy, because the parasite can pass to the fetus and damage the eyes and brain, and in people with weak immune systems, such as advanced HIV. It is one of the TORCH infections screened for in pregnancy.

For the nurse

Teach pregnant clients to have someone else change the cat litter (or wear gloves and wash hands), cook meat fully, wash fruits and vegetables and wear gloves when gardening.
