uterine rupture

A tear through the wall of the uterus during pregnancy or labor.

YOO-tuh-rin RUP-chur noun

What it means

An emergency in which the muscle wall of the uterus splits open, putting the pregnant client and the baby at risk of severe bleeding and lack of oxygen. The biggest risk factor is a scar from an earlier cesarean birth or other uterine surgery, especially during a trial of labor after cesarean. Other risks include strong contractions from too much oxytocin and trauma to the abdomen. It is treated by emergency cesarean birth.

For the nurse

During labor after a previous cesarean, monitor the fetal heart rate and contractions continuously. Report sudden changes in the fetal heart rate pattern, new or tearing pain, or a change in how contractions feel, and prepare for emergency surgery.
