What it means
An assistive device that gives more support than a cane. A standard walker is lifted and moved forward with each step; wheeled walkers glide, and some have four wheels, brakes and a seat. It is used after surgery or injury and for weakness or poor balance.
For the nurse
Set the height so the handgrips are at the wrist crease and the elbows bend slightly. Teach: move the walker forward, step into it with the weaker leg, then bring the stronger leg; stay inside the frame and do not lean over it. Clear the path of rugs and clutter.
