A small, firm cylinder of rolled cotton, about 3/8 to 1/2 inch across and 1 1/2 inches long. Surgical versions come sterile and can have a string at the end or the center.

Lengths and variants
3/8 x 1 1/2 inch and 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch; sterile versions are end strung or center strung (Teleflex). Dental rolls come non-sterile in bulk.
