What it means
A client who is able to make decisions has the right to refuse care and leave, even when that is not what the team advises. Leaving this way is called leaving against medical advice. The team explains the risks and the client is usually asked to sign a form saying they understand them; they can still leave if they refuse to sign. A client who is not able to make decisions, or is a danger to self or others, is handled differently under law and policy.
For the nurse
Stay calm and listen to why the client wants to leave; sometimes the problem can be solved. Tell the provider at once, explain the risks, offer the form and follow-up instructions, and document the conversation in detail. Do not hold back a competent adult by force, which can be false imprisonment.
