What it means
A pattern of behavior used to control another person in a close relationship. It can be physical, sexual, emotional or financial abuse, threats, or cutting the person off from others. Violence by a current or former partner is also called intimate partner violence. It often gets worse over time and can increase during pregnancy.
For the nurse
Ask about safety in private, away from the partner or family member. Document injuries and the client's own words objectively, offer resources and help with a safety plan, and follow state reporting laws, which always require reporting suspected child abuse.
