What it means
A synthetic progestin that prevents ovulation and thickens cervical mucus. The implant (Nexplanon) is a small flexible rod that a provider inserts under the skin of the inner upper arm; it is approved for 3 years and is one of the most effective reversible methods. It is also in the vaginal ring (with an estrogen). Irregular bleeding is the most common side effect.
For the nurse
Teach the client to feel for the rod after insertion, to keep the site clean and dry, and to report arm pain, numbness or a rod they cannot feel. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
