What it means
A synthetic progestin. It is in many combined birth control pills, in hormonal intrauterine devices (IUDs) that last 3 to 8 years depending on the product, and in emergency contraception taken as soon as possible, within 72 hours of unprotected sex. It prevents pregnancy mainly by stopping ovulation and thickening cervical mucus.
For the nurse
Teach that emergency contraception works best the sooner it is taken and does not end an existing pregnancy. With an IUD, teach the client to check for the strings and report severe belly pain, fever or unusual discharge. None of these protect against sexually transmitted infections.
