What it means
A synthetic progestin. The injection (Depo-Provera) prevents pregnancy for 3 months (13 weeks) by stopping ovulation. Tablets (Provera) treat missed periods and abnormal bleeding and protect the uterus in clients taking estrogen after menopause. Long-term injection use lowers bone density, and it may take months after the last shot for fertility to return.
For the nurse
Teach the client to come back every 12 to 13 weeks for the next shot, to get enough calcium and vitamin D and do weight-bearing exercise, and that irregular bleeding is common. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
