family dynamics

The patterns of how family members relate to, communicate with and influence one another.

FAM-ih-lee dy-NAM-iks noun

What it means

Every family has its own roles, rules, ways of talking and ways of making decisions. Illness, a new baby, a death or other stress can change these patterns. Healthy family dynamics support a client's recovery; conflict, poor communication or abuse can make care harder.

For the nurse

Notice who makes decisions and who gives care at home, and include them in planning with the client's consent. Refer to social work or family counseling when conflict gets in the way of care.
