What it means
A complementary therapy that uses essential oils, such as lavender or peppermint. They may be breathed in from a diffuser or a cotton ball, or diluted and massaged into the skin. Some clients find they ease anxiety, nausea or sleep problems. It is used alongside regular care, not in place of it.
For the nurse
Follow facility policy. Ask about allergies and asthma first, never let oils be swallowed, dilute them before they touch skin, and consider roommates and staff who share the air.
