guided imagery

A relaxation method in which a person pictures a calm, pleasant scene in detail, often led by a voice or recording.

GY-did IM-ij-ree noun

What it means

A non-drug way to ease stress, anxiety and pain. The client closes their eyes, breathes slowly, and imagines a peaceful place, using all the senses: what they see, hear, smell and feel. It is often used in labor, before procedures, and for long-term pain, alongside other treatments.

For the nurse

Use a quiet room and a calm voice, and let the client choose the scene. Ask how they feel afterward and chart the effect.
